Many countries have recognized the importance of great
engineering projects by honoring them on commemorative stamps. Here
are some of the stamps honoring MWH-designed projects.
Rio Negro Project, Uruguay
In 1942, a hydroelectric project in Uruguay could not be completed
because the Second World War had stopped the flow of equipment from
Germany. This opportunity to redesign the Rio Negro project to fit
the powerhouse for U.S. manufactured equipment gave MWH its start
in international consulting.

5 de Noviembre Hydroelectric
Project, El Salvador

Completed in 1954, the 5 de Noviembre Hydroelectric Project included
the first large underground powerplant in the Western Hemisphere,
initially with three 15-MW units.

Derbendi Khan Dam, Iraq
For many years, the Derbendi Khan Dam was the world's highest rockfill
dam. The 450-ft-high irrigation and flood control dam was constructed
amid a national revolution. Preliminary investigations began in
1953 and the project was completed in 1963.

East Ghor Canal, Jordan
The East Ghor Canal allows irrigation of nearly 28,000 acres between
the canal and the below-sea-level Jordan River. This was the first
development following a master plan report prepared by MWH.

Karun Dam, Iran
The Karun Dam is a double-curvature, thin-arch concrete dam that
is part of the Reza Shah Kabir Project that developed a significant
portion of the power and irrigation potential of Iran's largest
river, the Karun. An innovative design feature places the concrete
penstocks on the upstream face and integrally constructed with the
dam.

Karadj Dam
The Karaji Dam was the first of MWH's double-curvature, thin-arch
dam projects and it paved the way for the development of a highly
specialized structural engineering group that was an important asset
in attracting clients. The dam supplies the city of Teheran with
fresh water.

Indus Basin Project, Mangla
Dam, Pakistan
In the late 1960s, MWH helped to develop and implement Pakistan's
Indus Basin Project. It was the result of a treaty between Pakistan
and India, which ended a long and bitter dispute between the two
countries over the use of water from the Indus River and its five
tributaries. The first large dam built as part of the Indus Basin
Project was the Mangla Dam, completed in 1968. An essential part
of the project is the MWH -- designed spillway for a 1.1 million
cubic feet per second discharge.
