We provide full-service consulting, engineering, and construction expertise for the global mining industry. Our staff understands mining industry practices and helps clients achieve their overall objectives in the most efficient manner possible. MWH serves the mining industry through our local offices in 35 countries across six continents with assurance of globally-networked expertise, consistent service, and continuity of work products. In addition, our clients can rest assured that MWH and our staff implement projects in the safest manner possible, with the appreciation and practices in-place to maximize workplace safety and health. MWH maintains a strategic business philosophy of not representing the regulatory agencies on regulatory matters or enforcement actions, thus offering our mining industry clients the highest level of advocacy possible to address their issues in a practical manner. Our success at effectively representing our clients is directly attributable to our reputation before the regulatory community throughout the world as a client advocate producing high quality work that is credible and defensible. We are focused on addressing environmental, infrastructure, and energy issues in an efficient and end-point fashion, with an appreciation of the obstacles that regulatory and political agendas can present for an otherwise rational technical resolution. MWH’s primary service lines for the mining industry include:
Environmental Planning, Permitting and Compliance MWH is a recognized leader in environmental planning, compliance and management services, environmental impact studies, environmental audits and assessments, and permit applications for mining projects throughout the world. Our staff can provide a full range of environmental services that support mine permitting requirements, sustainable development, and mine life-cycle needs. We have productive working relationships with the primary government agencies involved with these requirements, including federal and state agencies (in the U.S.), international and host country regulatory agencies, and multilateral and private lending institutions. MWH’s success in preparing clear, concise, and defensible work products is based on a thorough understanding of relevant regulations and mining practices, combined with technical expertise in all required scientific and engineering disciplines. Our capabilities include the following.
Hydrogeological, Geochemical and Water Quality Services MWH offers a talented staff of geologists, hydrologists, hydrogeologists, geochemists, and civil engineers to conduct groundwater, water quality, and water resource investigations that support mine development, operation, and closure. We are experienced at constructing models and performing modeling with finite-element, finite-difference, and analytical codes for groundwater flow and geochemical and contaminant fate & transport applications. MWH offers this expertise and related field services from all of our offices around the world. MWH provides the following expertise.
Mine Water Supply, Management and Treatment Development of a comprehensive mine water management strategy is key to development of any new natural resource deposit or maintaining the social licence to continuing operations at existing mining sites. Therefore, MWH has development specific compentencies in all aspects of mine water management. These include design, construction, and operation of systems for water supply, wastewater treatment, dewatering storage and transmission of water as well as management and treatment of mine drainage and mill process water. MWH can analyze water management options and wastewater treatment requirements, and design, construct, start-up, and optimize a management/treatment system based on the unique factors of each site. Drainage control projects such as diversion channels, collection ponds, and collection/recovery systems are designed with the aid of state-of-the-industry computer software. These integrated services result in cost-effective and well-designed alternatives for the operational, closure, and post-closure phases of a mining project. Service highlights include the following.
Civil and Geotechnical Infrastructure Development MWH is known and trusted for our ability to design, construct, and complete world-class geotechnical and civil projects on-time and in some of the most complex situations and locations in the world. Our experience includes designing and managing construction for a 280-meter tall tailings dam in a highly seismic area in Peru to engineering certification and construction quality assurance for one of the most environmentally challenging leach pad developments in the USA. In addition, we can provide comprehensive civil and geotechnical infrastructure development services under a design/build approach or as an integrated management team with our client. MWH provides dedicated engineers for the duration of a project, from initial geotechnical investigations and completion of final design reports to field construction and implementation. In many cases, lead design engineers are also involved with the construction quality assurance and construction management aspects of the project to maximize quality contractor performance. The following highlights our civil and geotechnical service offerings.
Ecological Services and Natural Resource Management MWH offers comprehensive ecological and natural resource management services to support mining operations. With comprehensive ecological, scientific, and engineering resources, MWH brings a multi-disciplinary perspective to addressing environmental issues for a wide-range of ecological habitats, including riverine and riparian corridors, wetlands; woodlands; shrublands; grasslands and desert ecosystems. MWH has extensive knowledge of environmental regulations associated with mine site operations and closure planning and maintains excellent working relationships with federal, state and local regulatory and resource management agencies, including Native American Tribes. Our capabilities allow us to provide clients efficient, innovative, cost-effective, and sustainable solutions for natural resources and ecological issues. In addition, there are several areas where MWH personnel have exceptional capabilities. These areas of expertise include the following services.
Mine Waste Management, Reclamation and Closure MWH offers proven capabilities in developing and implementing waste management, reclamation and closure programs. We are at the forefront of mine waste management practices and reclamation technologies, and have completed large, high-profile reclamation and closure projects at high altitudes, in arid deserts and rain forest sites around the world. MWH takes pride in developing innovative mitigation, reclamation and closure plans in which we incorporate value-engineering evaluations, cost analyses to minimize overall reclamation costs and provide for efficient yet enhanced post-mining land uses. Minimizing waste volumes through innovative technologies is a priority for us. MWH has broad experience in the demolition, decommissioning, and closure of industrial facilities. We have acquired a thorough understanding of US, host country and international laws that regulate mine waste management, reclamation and closure activities.
