"Designing Cost-Effective Underground Railway Projects"

What's the most effective way for Singapore to effectively expand its medium capacity Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) System?

To handle that task, MWH was appointed by the Land Transport Authority of Singapore as prime consultant of the US $11.1 million expansion project.

Multi-Disciplinary Design Team

The MWH project includes designing six new stations over a 6.2-KM route.

Some of the major challenges include complex tunneling works in soft formation, as well as mixed face conditions with boulders. There is also a high groundwater profile to consider.

A large team of more than 130 multi-disciplinary design professionals are tackling the complex project.

These MWH employees, and subcontractors, have expertise in civil, structural, architectural, electrical, mechanical, scheduling, quality assurance and system assurance issues. The team will support the client by providing design services throughout the construction phases.

To design the optimum route configuration for the project, the team carried out extensive geotechnical investigations. The result is an innovative approach with a highly compact station design. The stations have large open space, but provide the Land Transit Authority with cost efficiencies as well.

MWH consulted with a number of entities during the design process. These consultations were held with government and local agencies, including utility companies, National Park Board, educational institutions, civil defense departments and environmental agencies.
