Everglades Restoration Plan |
|
"Protecting an Endangered Ecosystem" What's the most effective way to restore the Florida Everglades while providing local residents with a quality water supply? MWH is tackling this challenge in a five-year, US $25 million Everglades Program Management Services contract for the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD). For the project, MWH is teaming up with joint venture partner, Sverdrup Civil Inc., a subsidiary of Jacobs Engineering Group Inc. Comprising most of Southern Florida, the Everglades cover about 4,000 square miles. More than 2,300 miles are designated as National Park. The area is the largest remaining subtropical wilderness in the United States. The renowned ecosystem supports numerous plant and animal species. These include the endangered American crocodile, Florida panther and West Indian manatee. World's Largest Ecosystem Restoration Effort The Everglades Restoration Plan is the largest and most unique environmental ecosystem restoration effort in the world. The ambitious restoration plan will restore the natural flow of water in the national park. To achieve this goal, the SFWMD expects to remove many of the manmade structures that are obstructing natural water flow, and construct wastewater recycling and storage facilities. This project is part of the overall 30-year, $8 billion Everglades Restoration Plan, and the MWH contract includes a five-year option period. MWH will provide integrated program management support for this ongoing effort. Activities will include:
Working closely with government officials and local communities, MWH will help create a balance between the needs of a growing population and this fragile natural treasure. |
