“Deactivating, Decontaminating and Dismantling Facilities” How should the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) handle various contaminated facilities throughout the United States? MWH is helping the DOE tackle this effort in a comprehensive project, with an $800 million contract ceiling, awarded by the US DOE Savannah River Office in South Carolina. The project entails the deactivation, demolition and removal (DD&R) of a wide variety of contaminated DOE sites. Scattered around the nation, these DOE facilities were used for storage, as well as industrial, chemical and radiological processes. Radiological risks may include – among others – cesium, plutonium, tritium and strontium. Other non-hazardous chemicals may include asbestos, lead and beryllium.
