“Deactivating, Decontaminating and Dismantling Facilities”

How should the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) handle various contaminated facilities throughout the United States?

MWH is helping the DOE tackle this effort in a comprehensive project, with an $800 million contract ceiling, awarded by the US DOE Savannah River Office in South Carolina. The project entails the deactivation, demolition and removal (DD&R) of a wide variety of contaminated DOE sites.

Scattered around the nation, these DOE facilities were used for storage, as well as industrial, chemical and radiological processes. Radiological risks may include – among others – cesium, plutonium, tritium and strontium. Other non-hazardous chemicals may include asbestos, lead and beryllium.

From DD&R to Quality Control

MWH is providing a wide range of services, including:

  • Program and project management
  • DD&R services
  • Remediation
  • Radiological protection
  • Waste removal, packaging, transportation and disposal
  • General waste minimization
  • Safety and health programs
  • Quality control
  • Contract administration and procurement
  • Cost/schedule control

A key responsibility for MWH is to ensure that all activities are in full compliance with applicable laws, regulations and local requirements.
